Ruitong Cui is a London-based artist working with garment-based forms, wearable technology, and knitted textiles. Her practice explores relationships between human and non-human entities, reimagining garments as more than functional clothing. Her work investigates alternative forms of connection, care, and co-existence beyond human-centered narratives.

This thesis aims to critique anthropocentrism and speciesism, utilising fashion design as a medium to predisposition to perceive animals a particular way in order to prompt critical reflection and challenges the user to see clothing not just as an object.

Recurring attempts to present Breathing Companion as live performance rather than static garment — the body and the garment breathing together, staging co-existence rather than describing it.
Shared Breath
2026 GRADUATION SHOW
Performed at the graduate exhibition — an experimental staging of Breathing Companion in which performer and garment share one breath, enacting the project's argument for life, co-existence, and non-human kinship rather than illustrating it.
Also presented at ICSR 2026 + Art Conference — a human–robotics interaction performance responding to the forum's theme.
